MONTERREY, Mexico, June 7 (Reuters) - Mexico's Cemex, the world's No. 3 cement maker, has closed a deal to borrow $1.9 billion in two tranches from a group of banks, participating banks said on Tuesday.
Barclays and Citigroup said in a joint statement that the cement maker will use the credit to pay down other debt. A $1.2 billion loan will come due in five years and the other $700 million credit in four years, the banks said.
Cemex increased its debt to around $10 billion at the end of the first quarter with the purchase of Britain's RMC Group.
Cemex had no comment.
A source close to the deal said Cemex had reached an agreement to borrow up to $1.2 billion on Monday, and then on Tuesday the amount was raised by $700 million. "The demand for credit was higher and that's why the amount was raised," said the source, who asked not to be named.
Last week the Mexican cement maker announced its plans to link up with Ready Mix USA to form a strategic alliance to boost its business in the U.S. Southeast.
